Obsessions and Compulsions


You might be coming into therapy because you have lost touch with yourself. One outcome of not knowing your true reasons for living might be that you have started to act in ways which you yourself judge as being unreasonable, e.g frequent checking of lights before leaving the home. This is one way you might find useful in thinking about the development of obsessive and compulsive behaviours such as checking rituals, hand-washing, nail-biting, addictions, cleaning rituals, hoarding etc. You might have become caught up in repetitive behaviours which allow you to re-experience specific feelings or events.

Both these problems are best seen therefore as solutions to deeper problems which remain unresolved for you and can, through therapy, be better understood and resolved.
