You might be aware that feelings you have about your life more generally can become focussed on your body, from either unresolved or ongoing emotional difficulties. Terms such as body dysmorphic disorder can be used as a means of hiding from painful facts of our life situation and of taking a thorough look at ourselves.

Therapy can help to trace back the origins of these feelings, as well as help to evaluate them within a safe context. By gaining perspective, improved relationships can occur quickly, with oneself as well as with others. Sometimes there is truth in the felt sense of dissatisfaction with ones physicality, which has been exaggerated. Again, gaining perspective on this before jumping to rash decisions can become an important part of an effective therapy.
